Let's chat - September 16 on Twitter

Join us on Twitter for a conversation about digital literacy in adult education in the UO Conference’s first Twitter chat.

If you've never participated in a Twitter chat before, that’s OK - we've never hosted one before, so we will all be learning together! All you need is a Twitter account (it’s free) and internet access during the scheduled time.

A Twitter chat is an online conversation using Tweets on a specific subject. Anyone on Twitter can join in; so it is a great opportunity to network and meet others in the field who are interested in the same topic. It is structured as a set of questions that you reply to or comment on; the questions are posted as the chat happens by the chat moderators (more on them below). You need to know our hashtag - #uochat. Search that hashtag to find the chat. And make sure to add that hashtag to all of your tweets so others can follow and respond to your thoughts.

The first chat you join can be a little overwhelming if there are a lot of participants. Don’t worry about reading every Tweet. Choose some that are the most interesting to you and connect with those people or delve into more depth on a certain area of the topic. The chat moderators are also there to guide the conversation and help everyone participate. This first chat will be moderated by me (@deannajager) and Penny (@TheNerdyPenny). If you have any questions feel free to talk to us in advance or reach out to us on Twitter during the chat. This chat is part of the bigger community of practice we are cultivating through the UO Conference (@uoconference); we look forward to learning with you.

Call for presenters - UO Conference

The fourth annual UO Conference is looking for presenters for this year’s event on October 8 & 9, 2014. You are invited to put together a session on a topic related to online education based on your own experiences in teaching, development, or administration of adult online programs. We are seeking a wide variety of presenters in the online adult education community.

Here are a few  more details about presenting:

• All sessions will be run using Adobe Connect
• You will connect with a session moderator in advance of your session to do a test run; the moderator will also provide technical support during the presentation
• Sessions are 75 minutes long
• You will need to provide us with your presentation template, a presentation synopsis, a bio, and a photo in advance
• October 8th is a College-wide meeting day (there are no classes!)

The Curriculum Development Centre would like to congratulate Karim Jaber and Karlie Wimble on their nominations for the Bow Valley College Rookie of the Year Award. As you saw last Wednesday at the College Wide PD Day, Karim was the winner of the award. Congratulations Karim! 

Thank you Karlie and Karim for all your work with exam development, collaboration in the department, and for your perpetual sunny dispositions. It is a pleasure to work with both of you. You're both Rookie of the Year in our eyes.

Professional Development Webinars with ASCD

In my search for professional development opportunities for me and the curriculum development team, I came across the website for ASCD (The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). Some of you may already be aware of what ASCD offers, but for those who aren't familiar with them, I thought I would share what I found. 
ASCD holds a yearly conference, and also has a wide variety of books, videos and webinars. ASCD is an American association, but I think many of the webinars they offer are applicable to our department and our professional development needs. The webinars are all archived and they can be accessed at the ASCD website under Professional Development (and they're free!). This kind of professional development also lends itself well to group learning. If you and a couple colleagues are interested in the same topic, you could book a room and attend the webinar together.
