UO Conference: Chris Appleton

The UO Conference sessions have given me much to reflect on, and I suspect that with time, ideas that were presented will knock on my door when I least expect them, but most need them. However, today I want to remember and share some ideas from just one presentation, as breadcrumbs for a future day of working with learners.

Chris Appleton, who presented on Adaptable Online Learning Environments, showed methods for "cater(ing) to multiple different types of learners," and spoke to why we should provide course material in multiple formats. Included, were ideas for reaching students based on their learning style, but Chris also stressed the importance of providing learning material in a multitude of ways, so that it is accessible to students with various disabilities and needs.

With adaptable learning, learners can choose how they want to receive instruction: hear it, see it, read it, try it. Chris describes his own online learning modules as a sort of Choose Your Own Adventure book for learners, allowing for "multiple means of engagement, action, and expression."
